Turkey news

This year we are not able to rear our own turkeys as Claire is having an op on her back in mid December (interesting timing!). However, for those of you have already ordered - please don't worry - we can supply you with some reared to the same meticulous standard and quality by a fellow organic farmer. Many apologies for this year to all our lovely customers - please remember to come back to us for 2012!

Lamb for the freezer!

Just to let you know that we will be taking some lambs in during the next couple of weeks - whole £140 or half £70, butchered to your own spec. Do give us a ring if you would like to order some. Half a lamb takes up roughly one draw in an upright freezer in case you need a guideline on storage space!

Well it has been a while since we have updated! We have been through a lot of changes here but all is going well. We are no longer growing chicken, although we do still have our lovely laying hens. September often feels more New Yearish than New Year itself... one of my many resolutions is to keep you all updated more often! So, I'll keep you posted...

Hens are here!

O how fantastic! 450 little fluffy brown 18 week old hens arrived this morning from Ben & Cathy Wetherden in Devon. They look very happy in their sparkling clean shed. Unfortunately in our excitement a gate got left open by Farmer Head and our sheep escaped but thanks to Ben, we got them all back in!!

Tea at the Pig!

Just got to mention - we called in at the Salt Pig in Wareham yesterday evening and had one of James' fantastic meat pies for tea. What a treat! Thanks James! We highly recommend you do the same...!

Hens on their way!

Today Andrew has been busy putting up a fence for the new chickens so that we can keep them safely in their own field. Now we just have a bit more hot pressure washing of the sheds to do and then they can be moved and the fence built around them! Hens arrive Monday, all being well.

Animals on the move!

We have had a busy few days. The rain has made the ground very boggy indeed and the cows and sheep were not happy and each time Andrew went to feed, the tractor made more and more mess of the ground. Our farm has very few dry areas, but a big barn! Saturday we spent the day moving two groups of our cows. We dismantled the turkey accommodation and did a bit of interior redesign of the shed and hey presto - home for cows! They are much happier - they can eat in the dry and roam outside when they want to. Monday we did the same for the sheep and they seem pretty happy with it all as well!

Orphan calf

Just before Christmas one of our lovely cows died and left us with a beautiful heifer (girl!) calf only born in late October. We have been feeding her every day and she has been sharing a little shed with our alpacas and getting on very well. She is absolutely gorgeous - we are hoping she will grow into a lovely cow like her Mum. All our pedigree animals have a name: Andrew has been calling her Lily.

Today we had a team of happy pluckers and made a good start on getting your Christmas dinner ready! We all had jolly cold feet but fortunately our lovely friend Nai supplied us with tea and minced pies and then mulled wine at the end of the day. Fab! More later....

Snowy scenes...

How beautiful everything looks in the snow! We went on our daily rounds of checking and all the animals were wanting a bale of hay as they couldn't get to the grass! All the water troughs had a good inch of ice that had to be smashed too. Then they were all happy!
